デザイナーのビル・スタンフはかつてこう言っています。
「私は、自分自身のためにデザインしています。
他人がチェアに対して感じる座り心地の良さはわかりませんが、自分の場合ならはっきりとわかります」
アーロンチェアは「ぜひこの素晴らしいチェアに座ってみたい」という発想を基にデザインされました。
アーロンチェアの開発には7年の期間がかかりましたが、そのきっかけは意外なものでした。
ビル・スタンフと彼のデザイン・パートナーであるドン・チャドウィックは、
高齢者が長時間座ったままでいるときのニーズを調査する、
ハーマンミラーの研究プロジェクトに関わったのです。
そして彼らは、4時間座り続けた時に、チェアと身体との間にこもる熱が大きな問題の一つとなることを発見しました。
3年後、スタンフとチャドウィックが新しいワークチェアのデザインについて考え始めた時、
この発見が大きく関与することになったのです。

「私たちは、まったく新しい種類のチェアを開発したいと思いました」と、スタンフとチャドウィックは語っています。
そのため、彼らは人間工学的なワークチェアのデザインや機能のあるべき姿についての先入観をすべて捨て去ることにして、
白紙の状態からスタートしました。その結果誕生したのが、オフィスチェアという概念そのものに革命を起こす製品でした。
布張りもされていなければ、中のウレタン材もなく、クッションに代わるメッシュ素材ペリクルサスペンションが空気を通し、
長時間座り続けても熱がこもりません。アーロンチェアには直線のラインが一つもありません。
人間の身体は直線からできていないからです。スタンフとチャドウィックがデザインした曲線からなる形状は、
体重による圧力を自然に分散してくれるので、血流が妨げられることはありません。
役員のためのモデルも、一般社員のためのローモデルもありません。透明で、環境に負担をかけない民主的なチェアです。
とはいえ、その独特のデザインは、ニューヨーク近代美術館が永久収蔵品の一つに加えられたほどです。
アーロンチェアの独特の形は、このチェアの目的そのものを表しています。
光を反射し透明感のある表面は、風通しの良い品質を生み出しています。
チェアがユーザーと一体化し、置かれた環境ともスムーズに溶け込みます。
環境にも配慮がなされており、
部品の多くが再生素材で作られているほか、耐用年数も長く、
製品の寿命が終わった後はほとんどの部分がリサイクル可能です。
